Apropos of Joe Rogan discussing Getting High On Krystle in his podcast last week (and doing a remarkably good job at recounting the story accurately) an interview with me is featured in the new book On Acid in which I discuss Joe Rogan's unlikely status as the foremost DMT authority on the internet. Here is an excerpt:

AA: One of the themes of sixties counterculture was the critique of traditional authority, and psychedelic drugs were part of a movement of self-exploration that promoted you being your own authority – but one of the side effects has been that after forty or fifty years of that attitude people can become quasi-authorities –they’re not really an expert on a particular subject, they’ve just amassed a certain cultic intensity.

HM: There are many true authorities on these subjects but they are often reluctant to talk publicly because self-experimentation and the use of illegal or even legally grey substances is seriously frowned upon in academia, especially in the hard sciences, less so in anthropology or ethnobotany. So while many of the true authorities quietly publish papers in scientific journals, those who want the attention become self-appointed authorities. From the public perspective who is the number one authority on DMT? It is not Alexander Shulgin or Jace Callaway or Richard Glennon––it’s Fear Factor host and stand up comedian Joe Rogan––Joe Rogan probably teaches more people about DMT than any other human being on earth. Psychedelics require serious repackaging before they are ready for public acceptance and the scientists are not going to be the ones to do that repackaging. Things could be much worse, historically drug experts have been people like Betty Ford or Kitty Dukakis, that is people who not only knew nothing about drugs but also had seriously problematic relationships with them.

RIB AMBIGUITY

I'm trying to identify all the possible rib configurations that can be represented in an engraving of a cactus consisting of five parallel lines and, more importantly, which is the likely the "correct" interpretation. Many people (Davis, Sharon, Trout et al.) have suggested that the beast on the left holds a four-ribbed cactus yet I feel that may be an incorrect interpretation. The beast only has one eye, but I do not think many would characterize it as a one-eyed beast. The hair-snakes also have one eye, but I do not think many would characterize them as one eyed snakes, nor do I think anyone would suggest the beast has some kind of ankle disorder causing its feet to point sideways. Obviously some tricks of perspective are at play, some parts of the body (the torso) are displayed in a squashed omni-perspective, other seem to take on a more conventional perspective were opposing sides are implied, if the cactus has another side then it is (probably) not a four ribbed cactus. I modified the second two engravings to show the two "correct" way to draw a four ribbed cactus in three dimensional space.

In this debate with my chemist friend that I mentioned in the previous entry, we discussed various things that would qualify as examples of thinking two separate thoughts simultaneously. Among the things tossed around were one-man marching bands, "reading" and advancing pages in a book while thinking about an unrelated topic, and writing two different stories simultaneously––one story with each hand. The latter was the only feat we could both agree was evidence that thinking two simultaneous thoughts is possible, I just needed an account of somebody successfully doing it.

I was certain I had read stories about ambidextrous writers composing two stories simultaneously, but when I went looking I had trouble finding them. According to several sources Branwell Brontë, Emily Brontë's brother, could write two different letters simultaneously, one with each hand. But there was another piece of evidence I was looking for that I could not put my finger on, then I stumbled across this interview, which was probably somewhere deep in my subconscious (I had not seen the material since I was five):

A few weeks ago I got into a debate with a chemist friend regarding the ability to think two simultaneous thoughts; I felt it was possible, he felt it was not. The question of whether a human can think two thoughts at once is interesting, but it raises a larger overarching question of whether a human can perceive their own thinking with any degree of accuracy in the first place e.g. what is apparently a single thought could be made of numerous competing sub-thoughts, which amalgamate into a something that is perceived as a single thought. Conversely, something that may feel like a chaotic jumble of parallel thought tracks may be a single thought that is chaotic in its character, or a fast oscillation of many competing single track thoughts that never quite run in parallel. What I am talking about is the inherent flaw of metacognition, the distortion one likely encounters when thinking about their own thoughts i.e. the problem that arises when one tries to measure the performance of a device with the same device performing the measurement. I am not talking about the observer effect per se.

Here is an example: when one ingests a reputed nootropic and 'feels' more intelligent as a result it does not necessarily mean their cognitive performance has been improved in anyway that could be externally measured. Self-perception has very little to do with actuality of self, in fact I believe it is quite likely that a true nootropic may fill one with feelings of inadequacy, stupidity, and intellectual insecurity. This is the nootropic paradox, feeling smart and being smart are two completely separate things, an effect demonstrated by Dunning and Kruger and hinted upon in an infamous passage from HMV by Stanislaw Lem, "I had learned to apply a kind of test. I would read my own articles, those I considered the best. If I noticed in them lapses, gaps, if I saw that the thing could have been done better, my experiment was successful. If, however, I found myself reading with admiration, that meant I was in trouble."

Does anyone know of a word for this concept? The probable gap between perception of thought and actuality of thought (if there is such a thing as actuality of thought beyond action potentials and and other neurochemical interactions*), the idea that we cannot accurately perceive our own thinking because we think about thinking with the same instrument performing the thought.

*In which case, our perception of thought is the only thought that exists. Although I'm talking about the kinds of 'thoughts' that seem to have metabolic correlates in fMRI, the question I am asking is philosophical not scientific––I am simply wondering if this concept of not being able to accurately measure our own thoughts because we are thinking them has a name...but even using the word 'accurate' is troublesome, because all measurement is relative to a standard and without a standard of thought measurement is impossible. So the question of 'accurate' perception of our own thought may be moot.

Disregarding crest, spines, and rootball, if one were to model a cactus as non-convex prism (say a heptagrammic (7-2) prism for a seven ribbed cactus) how could one write an equation to predict changes in surface area as additional 'ribs', each of which is composed of two faces, are added to the prism? Here is the tricky part, in this cactus prism the core circumference where the ribs differentiate and the outer circumference where the ribs terminate must remain consistent regardless of rib count. I've provided an illustration that I hope clarifies what I am describing.

Or, for the sake of simplicity, a two dimensional model would be completely sufficient to describe a cross section of a columnar cactus. So how could one predict the changes in perimeter as additional points are added to a series of star polygons, each of which is inscribed upon a consistently sized annulus between two concentric circles? Any help writing such an equation would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, would one expect the increase in perimeter to be linear as additional points are added to the star polygon?

I just noticed that liberties on a go board correspond to the placement of hydrogen atoms on simple alkane hydrocarbons, e.g. n-propane includes eight hydrogen atoms and three go stones placed in a straight line will have eight liberties, the same holds true for any straight chain arrangement. Isopropane would correspond with the empty triangle with seven liberties or seven hydrogens––but isopropane does not exist–– if you were to create isopropanol with an opponents stone representing an oxygen atom then the analogy would stand or an isopropyl moiety with the central carbon/stone attached to an R-group. Cyclobutane includes eight hydrogrens and a square four stone unit (not to be confused with a ponnuki) will have eight liberties. Cyclohexane includes twelve hydrogen atoms and the corresponding six stone ring/eye has twelve liberties. I wonder if the convergence does not end there, could the same factors that define the strength and influence of a go shape impact, say, the stability of a molecule?

Hamilton Morris is a young writer, chemist and filmmaker. He is a wizard of pharmacology, a psychedelic explorer, a maestro of all things mind-altering. You may know Hamilton from his column in Vice, Hamilton's Pharmacopia, where he writes about rare drugs and their effects to a fanatical degree. He is also the man behind the VBS documentary series of the same name. In his most recent doc, NZAMBI, Hamilton travels to Port-au-Prince to investigate the strange phenomenon of the Haitian zombie; the film follows his quest to procure the secret formula for the potion used in Vodou zombification rituals. But this is merely one of Hamilton's many curious and magical adventures, as he shared with us recently when we paid him a visit at home.

KARLEY SCIORTINO: What's your most prized possession?

HAMILTON MORRIS: I once owned a stick coated with Phyllomedusa bicolor skin secretions given to me by a Mayoruna Indian chief, but it was thrown away by a dyslexic Craigslist prostitute who I used to live with. He thought it was a piece of trash. I also have a diagram of the DiPT molecule drawn and signed by Alexander Shulgin, and on one occasion I traded a small quantity of crystalline psychotridine for a lion's eardrum.

SCIORTINO: If you had to name a favorite drug...

MORRIS: That is an impossible question, as there are different materials for different occasions. I have a deep affection for DiPT, a psychedelic, and pramiracetam, a nootropic. And several others, which I probably should not mention—I'm being a bit vanilla, so forgive me.

SCIORTINO: Your house is a bit disorderly, you do not have sheets on your bed, there is some mold growing in your bathroom, and you claim not to shower often. Is personal hygiene something that is important to you?

MORRIS: Cleaning is the ultimate Sisyphean task; you sweep the motes of dust into the air, where they fall back down to the ground. It makes me feel like a cartoon character to sweep, like I am a Sim-person sweeping Sim-dust. The same goes for sheets and pillowcases. One must ask oneself the question, who is protecting who from what? Am I protecting my face from the pillow or the pillow from my face, and regardless of the answer, how is a pillowcase the solution? What protects the pillowcase? Why not put a pillowcase-case over the pillowcase, why not sleep in a Russian doll of recursive protective linens, why not put on successive pairs of underwear until I turn into the Mandelbrot set? This is mise en abyme; it is a recipe for madness that can be avoided with the understanding that the pillow is already encased, the mattress is already covered, and the dust is seemingly governed by Aristotelian spontaneous generation and no amount of sweeping will ever eliminate it.

SCIORTINO: Is there a scientific explanation as to why smoking weed before sex make me cum harder?

MORRIS: There are no published scientific papers on the effects of weed on female libido, and THC does not directly stimulate any of the neurochemical pathways that are thought to arouse women, things like D3 and 5HT1A receptor agonism or testosterone elevation or melanocortin modulation. Indeed the only paper on the subject indicates THC decreases libido, at least in male mice, so there is probably a more complex psychological-cum-psychedelic mechanism at play. Maybe it’s the animalistic dank pheromonal musk of the sticky nugg, the sizzle and pop of the red cystolith hairs as they slowly, sensuously burn. The paradoxical combination of analgesia and entactogenesis, but I don’t smoke weed, so I can’t say.

SCIORTINO: If you could offer one lesson to the recreational-drug-taking population, what would it be?

MORRIS: Simply because you take drugs does not mean you are an expert on them. In fact, there seems to be an inverse relationship between drug consumption and drug knowledge: more of the former results in less of the latter. If that seems obvious, you have probably gone easy on the former, though this relationship only applies to curious people who are seriously interested in drugs. But it can never hurt to do some basic research: start with Google Scholar and work from there. I say this not out of snide condescension, but out of love—love for you, and most importantly love of knowledge and the pursuit of truth.

SCIORTINO: Of the drugs you have tried, which have you found most erotic?

MORRIS: There was a designer sildenafil analogue, I believe it was sulfoaildenafil, marketed under the brand name Stiff Nights, which resulted in a few days of sub-clinical priapism—not exactly sure if that was erotic.

SCIORTINO: You own a lot of books by David Foster Wallace. What is it that you love about him?

MORRIS: I love DFW with a burning passion. He is one of very few writers that approach something close to the way humans think. That is to say, his writing is psychedelic in the etymological sense—it is mind-manifesting. His low latent inhibition, his maximalist style, it's exciting in a way few things are—literary or otherwise. As a result there will be a backlash against him, DFW will become uncool, because the postmodern paradigm must be burned for new growth to spring from its stylistic ashes, but replacing literary postmodernism is, of course, a hopelessly postmodern task and maybe it's best not to discuss this. Maybe we should all become slam poets.

That said, I have pre-ordered The Pale King on Amazon and I eagerly await the moment it arrives in my mailbox in mid April 2011.

SCIORTINO: You spend a lot of time in the library. I find libraries to be rather sexually stimulating. Would you agree?

MORRIS: There was a Russian cult of eunuchs known as the Skoptsy who were renowned for their proficiency as mathematicians, bankers, and moneylenders. Outsiders called them rapacious but this was simply their jealousy speaking—when one is freed from sexual desire, or sexual desire is transmuted into work, suddenly the world becomes engorged with possibilities. I envy the asceticism of the Skoptsy and wish I could attain a similar level of removal from the carnal temptations of the moment, but those gonadal androgenic hormones are crucial for hippocampal neurogenesis, so I can't justify auto-castration just yet. Although, I have gone to library every day for the last three years, most nights sleeping on the floor using my shoe as a pillow, so that's a start.

SCIORTINO: What are some of the questions you are regularly asked, or topics that are regularly raised by your admirers via fan-mail Facebook messages and e-mails?

MORRIS: One person recently asked me, and I quote, "It's possible pulverizer marijuana for later snort?" I always answer to the best of my abilities. Once an anesthesiologist and dog breeder offered me a prize-winning Russkiy Toy, which I appreciated enormously, but then I got greedy and asked if I could have propofol instead. I have had people who deal in psychoactive chemicals ask to pay me as a consultant, to keep them abreast of various trends in the designer drugs and pipeline pharmaceuticals—but that kind of gray-market business is not for me.

SCIORTINO: Do you hope to be remembered, and for what?

MORRIS: On one hand I have great literary and artistic aspirations, but being remembered for anything is an accomplishment, even if it is ingesting the world's largest quantity of semen or being struck by lightning the greatest number of times.

SCIORTINO: And lastly, does taking drugs automatically make a person cool?

MORRIS: No. Doing drugs is like anything else—predicated on taste, refinement, dignity, distinction, and originality. Cocaine is not cool, because it makes people act cartoonishly fiendish, and that is undignified. But when you get into more obscure territory, matters of cool become unclear. Is intraocular temazepam injection "cool?" Well, it's unusual and by virtue of its unusualness, interesting, and by virtue of its interestingness, cool—if one were to follow that chain of propositions.

Self-destruction is only as cool as it is novel. There is nothing cool about consuming ten-dollar drinks at whatever incredibly loud bar with the vague hope that you will be photographed and vanity-stroked on a blog the next day, but if I throw hydrochloric acid on my face and blame it on an imaginary black woman in a Starbucks parking lot, that may be cool.

Whenever I attempt to classify the vague, quasi-tranparent, clarifying effects of piracetam -- the best comparison I can make is low dose nicotine. Although I was aware that piracetam and other members of the racetam family modulate the cholinergic system in a variety of ways (some through direct agonism of the nicotinic AChR) I had never considered any direct structural similarities between the classes.

Much of nicotine's pro-cognitive, nootropic, memory-enhancing properties are a product of its primary metabolite, cotinine. So I was amazed to find that cotinine shares the methylpyrrolidone nucleus of the racetam family. The nitrogen in piracetam's ethylamine side chain could even overlap cotinine's nitrogen in the pyridine ring. There's an enormous number of cotinine/piracetam hybrids that are totally unexplored. The only pyridine containing racetam I'm aware of is Nicoracetam, which pulls up nothing on google scholar, in fact I can find no mention of it outside wikipedia, so I'm not even sure why it has an entry.

I would be especially interested in a simple pyridine substitutions on the side chain, or conformationally constrained tricyclics or, heck, why not throw on a 4-phenyl and alpha methyl and make it an amphetamine, nicotine, piracetam chimera! I'm aware it probably wouldn't retain the positive effects of any in the three. Still, I would be surprised if there weren't a winner somewhere in the midst...

I'm seriously fucking peeved about how few synthetic cannabinoids incorporate a 2-methoxyphenyl moiety. Admittedly, JWH-250 is kind of boring but the same holds true for JWH-018, JWH-081, and JWH-200. JWH-073 is the only one of these compounds which warrants (calculatedly) risking ones health - as it is truly a powerful psychedelic catalyst which surpasses Δ9-THC in every possible way - if not for that pesky (putative) carcinogenic metabolite.

I have heard well informed people say that they think, in terms of carcinogenicity, the napthalene moiety is a red herring, but why? If napthalene is not to blame then what is? Regardless, when one exchanges a 2-methoxyphenyl for napthalene the decrease in potency and binding at CB1 is modest enough that there is really no reason to continue using and selling these naphthyl compounds. In terms of subjective effects the N-butyl compounds like JWH-073 are superior to the more potent N-pentyls - so what about N-butyl JWH-250? I'm sure Huffman has synthed it but I can't look up its numerical designation right now, what I do know is that it has never been sold. It would be only a hair less potent than JWH-073, the same goes for the WIN55212-x compounds which are unexplored and fertile territory and as far as I can tell have never undergone 3-methoxyphenyl substitution.

I wish there were more work done to elucidate the nuanced effects of these cannabinoids - sure affinity at CB1 is an important measure of potency but why are certain cannabinoids more colorful - or psychedelic - or stimulating? As technology stands such tests would require human consumption and a cannabinoid version of Pihkal would probably be very (very) redundant. But now that im getting really into the SAR of CB1 agonists I'm realizing what an insane ligand whore that receptor really is - there is no hope in creating tests to screen for them all - this is only the beginning!!!

I just went to the Marina Abramovic retrospective at MOMA, I was especially interested in a 1974 performance called RYTHM 2, which was described as follows:

Does anyone have information regarding the pharmacology of Gigantine, perhaps even an etymological note? Gigantine is the best sounding substance since the octopus derived Octopamine and the (not yet realized) Hamphetamine sulfate (76:24 ratio of d:l isomers (of course)). I understand Gigantine is basically an isoquinoline which makes activity very unlikely and shulgin only tested the 2,3,4 substitution pattern PEAs in TMA-3 which was found to be inactive at 100mg, not to mention the tertiary amine which will doubtlessly interfere with binding. So i would not hold high hopes for Gigantine...but then again who really Knows?

in the borges story death and the compass the final murder, which was supposed to occur on the forth point of a rhombus, is actually executed on the third point of an equilateral triangle. oddly, there is no way a fourth point added to an equilateral triangle can yield a rhombus* an equilateral triangle can compose half of a four sided polygon or at best a trapazoid, but a rhombus is composed of two isosceles triangles joined at the base, so thats my first confusion. my second confusion is in regards to the final shape the detective wishes to be executed upon in his next incarnation. the shape is drawn out above, a line segment starting at A with death occurring at D. what is the significance of this shape, is it referenced in kabbalistic literature? is it nonsensical (doubtful)?

i would like to stop for a moment to propose a new word:

1 Pharmacology (of a molecule) having a structural resemblance to its biological target on a macroscopic level: Prostaglandin E1 looks like an erect penis.

the crucial point in the above example is that Prostaglandin E1 looks like an erect penis* AND is used to treat erectile dysfunction. etymologically, pharma is from the latin pharmaceuticus "of drugs" & cognateis from cognatus "of common descent." i could probably think of a better word to suit this definition. not that it really matters because pharmacognate is almost never needed and is ultimately a useless example of pareidolia** furthermore when you consider many molecules are structurally flexible with rotating bonds it becomes an even more useless term (not that a molecular diagram is in any way an accurate representation of the "actual" molecule in the first place).

nonetheless, certain molecular diagrams do resemble various things, related or unrelated to their behavior. heroin looks like a horseshoe crab, imipramine looks like a kite, MDAI looks like something btw a larva and a bow-tie. they may be shapes in the clouds, man, but that does not mean their shouldn't be a poorly chosen word to describe (a minority of) them!

fun with neuromodulators and enzymatic inhibition

i went to whole foods today and asked them if they sold phenethylamine or PEA, they led me to their phenylalanine

"no not phenylalanine - Phen-Ethyl-Amine"

"whats it do?"

"its a stimulant"

"oh no stimulant is not a whole food words, cummon man, stimulant is not a whole foods word!"

PEA is a neurotransmitter and the wildly addictive backbone of most classic stimulants, seemingly its even more addictive than amphetamine (of which PEA is the parent compound). its unclear to me if this is because it's a subjectively superior stimulant (likely) or because the shortened duration makes it fit all of the classic criterion of a super addictive substance ((fast onset/short duration/frequent administration required) also likely) the reason that PEA has not gained widespread popularity is that it's almost immediately deamined by MAO rendering it inactive moments after ingestion. there are two popular ways of overcoming the enzymatic tyranny of MAO, the first being direct inhibition via a pharmaceutical MAOI (with the MAO-B selective selegiline being most popular) and the second is to overwhelm MAO by taking mega doses often in excess of a gram. with MAO-B inhibition the dose of PEA is comparable to amphetamine ie >25mg ie very strong.

it seems to be a small minority of people that can play with the selegiline+PEA combo without getting miserably addicted, a miniscule minority. in many ways it is the holy grail of stimulants: (arguably) safe, dirt cheep, and completely legal. yet it's not something people can use responsibly, like crack (although i have used crack very responsibly in the (distant) past). so how can one change this, how can one take advantage of this beautiful molecule which holds so much potential? PEA has a half life of 1 minute ((comp. to smoked crack which has a half life of 56 min) although PEA's t_1/2 must be longer with MAO inhibition (more research is required)) thusly it necessitates continuous redosing - the first solution is to create some kind of mechanical time release mechanism, ill leave that to others. the second is to introduce a time release mechanism inherent to the molecule á la vyvanse.

so here is my solution: lys-PEA aka alpha-desmethyl-lisdexamfetamine. a time release PEA prodrug, when taken with a MAOI it should have a long and healthy duration (im guessing something closer to normal dexamp sans lysine) a low dose, low toxicity, and ultra-low illegality. it will overcome the SAS criterion i outlined above and will probably be an incredibly effective ADHD treatment. the TRUE holy grail of psychostimulants. perhaps it would even be embraced by whole foods, after all lysine and phenethylamine are both TOTALLY natural. i only want to help people.

Equilibrium dissociation constants:

Phenethylamine: NE: 10.9; DA: 39.5; SE > 10000.*
Amphetamine: NE: 7.07; DA: 24.8; SE: 1765.
Methamphetamine: NE: 12.3; DA: 24.5; SE: 736.

I cant help but wonder about the nature of these two unnamed unstudied unsynthesized and generally unknown (tentative) psychostimulants - and by "wonder about the nature" i mean to say "obsess over the possibility" that they will be the most earth shatteringly powerful stimulants known to man which will usher in a new and sleepless era of hyperproductivity and total self-realization.

the molecule on the left is an analog of desoxypipradrol featuring the notorious 3,4-dicholoro substitution which sextuples the potency of methylphenidate, when added to the already perfect desoxypipradrol it could produce a stimulant fully active in the tens of micrograms.

the molecule on the right is the alpha-propyl homolog of buphedrone, elongating the alpha substituent in cathinones causes an increase in potency (the opposite effect is seen amphetamines) so one could imagine this chemical having a dosage in the general league of MDPV (whose subjective effects are toxic and miserable) but with no concern over a pro-oxidant dihydroxy conjugation ready metabolite (is that a legit concern ive never been sure?) i think its name should be penthedrone which has a nice ring to it - and im done.

I'm not sure if these three pictures are real or if it's a sadistic prank made to freak-out drug addicts. The 4-methylaminorex and crystalline PCP are especially impressive as are the several thousand hits of LSD. At the very least it would appear he mixed up his coca leaves with some wrappers in a large foil envelope?

Maybe it's performance art: the spectacle of destroying a drug collection.

2011 Update: I have spoken with the man who once possessed this collection and it was indeed real and he did actually destroy it (at his girlfriend's behest).
